Meteora – The Rising Cliffs

Meteora – The Rising Cliffs

per person
The Meteora (Gr. Μετέωρα – “The Rising Cliffs”, “Air Rising”) is one of the largest and most famous Greek monasteries complexes. The monasteries are built on impressive natural rock pillars, in the northwestern part of Thessaly Plain, near the Penei River and the Pindo Mountains. It is believed that this gray-skinned forest of stalagmites formed 60 million years ago of sandstone (formerly seabed). These impressive derivatives are a unique gift of nature to our world.
It is believed that in the adjacent rocks of Feopetra, just 5 kilometers south of Meteor, people lived 50 millions years ago. The first inhabitants of Meteora led the lives of lonely hermits, meeting only on Sundays and holidays, praying in the chapel at the foot of the Dhoupian Rock. In this place many years later the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary rose.

The exact date of establishment of the Meteora monasteries is also unknown. It is known that in the late 11th century or early XII, near this area was concentrated a simple community of monks, and at the end of the 12th century hermits caught up in Meteor. The more pronounced development of the monasteries can be observed only in the 14th century, when the monk Afanasis, with his followers from Mount Mount (Chalkidiki), between 1356 and 1372, established the already known Great Meteora Monastery, which became a cover for political persecutors. Meteora monasteries are set at 300 – 625 meters. The only way to reach these monasteries at that time was to climb a long, steep ladder. Whenever the monks felt danger, pulled them on the hill and no one was invited, outsiders could not get inside.
Visiting Meteora Monasteries, you can see many of the monks’ life history. First of all, it is an impressive church that has been decorated with Byzantine frescoes from floor to ceiling. Tourists in the monastery can also see the old kitchen, which has a dining room, decorated with icons on the walls and silverware on the tables. There are also several small museums in the monastery. They exhibit ancient monks, religious articles, military uniforms, and weapons reflecting Greek struggles, and even the bones of monks. For a frequent tourist, the old wine cellar, the underground prison, the long corridor and the lifting winch with a net that was used to pull things into the monastery will help the atmosphere of the monastery.
In total, twenty-one Meteora monasteries were built, but in the 19th century they were built. most of them collapsed. There are currently six monasteries. Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular tourist destination.

Meteora is an extraordinary place for those who like active recreation. Thousands of climbers come here every year to test their forces by climbing unusual cliffs with monasteries at their top.
