THE CANYON OF NILEOS

THE CANYON OF NILEOS

per person
Outside the village of Agia Anna, three kilometers to the West, in a mountainous Area we find the well-known canyon of  Nileos, and the other canyon name are “Boulovinaina”. History claims that during the Greek Revolution of 1821, a woman called Boulovinaina attempted to escape the Turks by falling into the canyon which in turn took her name.
Specifically, it is said that during the Turkish conquest, in a cavern in the canyon, around 40 people hid from the Turks, one of which was Boulovinaina. For some reason she left the canyon and as she returned was seen by the Turks. In order to avoid being captured and giving away the hiding place of the others, she fell into the canyon.
Along the canyon, flows the river Nileas, which wells from mount Xiros. The canyon is only 3km away from Agia Anna and the visitor can reach it through the village of Paliovrisi.
The canyon is also called Arapis (negro). Possibly this name was derived from the legend that the sheep that drank water by the banks of Nilea river gave birth to black lambs.
The river is Neleus in North Evia. It flows north from the village of Cherry, but collects water from several low hills of the region. It runs almost the entire Nileas and flows into the Aegean near Cold Faucet. Undoubtedly such a name carries a very interesting story. Nileas and his twin brother Pelias are children of Poseidon and Tyro. Indeed Nileas connected indirectly with Enippea because Neptune to sexual intercourse with the Tyro took the form of Enippea who was the most beautiful of the river gods and with whom she was in love the Tyro. After entering the unavoidable domestic.
Pelias drove Nileas and became king of Iolkos. Pelias was succeeded by his son Jason. But even Nileas not kakopese why is the founder of the town of Pylos in Messinia. All this is nice but did not help us understand why this river named Neleus.
Don’t think to much, just take the backpacks and take the full adventure of the Nilea Gorge, which will delight not only your eyes with beautiful views but also fill your souls with adrenalin and pleasant sensations when  you will meet the nature fauna ...
